Maine Masters Floral Design - mmfd

One of MSF&GA goals is to provide quality education for its’ members. They are pleased to now offer the Maine Master Floral Design School (mmfd). The advanced floral design course will provide the specialized, up-to-date, and in-depth knowledge of the elements and principles of design coupled with experience in floral mechanics and techniques. This course of study will be applied to floral compositions that are complex in theory and design. mmfd was established in 2003 to promote floral design excellence for the members of MSF&GA. The focus is to provide a source for higher standards in the art of floristry.

. Mona Pease PCF and Laura McNelly PCF . Our Florist of the year 2006, Mona and Laura, are both employed at Shelley's Flowers & Gifts in Waldoboro, Maine. Mona has been involved in the floral industry for 20 years. She has functioned in all areas of the business. Working at Shelley's Flowers has given Mona the opportunity to regularly attend florists' shows, workshops and to achieve industry certifications in floral design and customer service. Most recently Mona achieved her MSF&GA Bridal Consultant Certification. Mona has worked behind the scenes at our MSF&GA shows and enjoyed working with nationally acclaimed designers. In her other life, Mona attends children"s writers conferences and workshops. She is a nationally published children's magazine author and a volunteer reader for the Success By Six Program who is working toward having a children's book published.

Laura McNelly has her degree in Education so her first interest in floral design was not professional. Laura began working with a neighbor and learned basics at that time. She then moved on to traditional floral shops working in Windsor and Rockland. Laura began working at Shelley's to continue her interest in floral design. She has worked to attain her Professional Certified Florist through MSF&GA's Education Programs. She has also been to the Teleflora Education Center in Oklahoma City. Laura enjoys working in all areas of floral design and has, like Mona, helped immensely in helping in the background producing some of MSF&GA's design programs.

Congratulations to our two Members Of The Year, we all appreciate your efforts for Maine State Florists' and Growers' Association.

The award is for an active member of the floricultural industry. The recipient should be one that is willing to share knowledge about our changing industry, who participates in functions presented by our Association, and is active in the industry. CRITERIA:

  1. Must be a member in good standing with the Association or an employee of a member in good standing.
  2. Must be active in industry through shows, fairs, seminars or other educational functions. Must be someone who pursues innovative ideas and is willing to share them with others.
  3. Must not have received the award in any previous year.

There is only one vote per member shop. Vote must be mailed in on MSFGA ballot. No phoned-in ballots will be accepted.

This award will be presented at the MSFGA show each year in September. A small plaque will be given the recipient and their name will be inscribed on the large plaque which the Association will display at their events.

An industry related book or publication will also be awarded to the winner to be placed in their local library, if they so desire, with an inscription in the book telling of the award, the recipient, and of their donation. An identical book will be purchased for the MSF&GA lending library for the use of the membership.

(Note): Recipient’s contributions to the industry must have occurred within the past year.

Past Recipients:

.. Amy Murphy PCF mmfd

. Amy Murphy PCF mmfd is employed at Cook's Florist in Presque Isle. An ambitious and exhuberant designer, Amy doesn't shy away from obstacles that she may face. Always a ray of sunshine when present, she loves to learn as much about her chosen career as possible. Amy has worked at Cook Florist since 1998. She has earned her Professional Certified Florist as well as her Maine Master Floral Designer Certifications from the MSF&GA's Education Programs. Amy prefers to design something unique, something daring, unexpected and expensive! She takes many new ideas back to Cook Florist from the MSF&GA shows she has attended and has turned a corner of the shop into "Prom Central" complete with prom dresses and maniquin hands.

Congratulations to Amy Murphy PFC mmfd on your Designer of the Year !

Edward D. Johnson Award 2007

. Alden Longfellow

. Born in 1926, Alden was the 5th of 6 children. He was raised on a farm in central Maine where his father grew gladiolus and sold them from a model A Ford to florist shops throughout Maine. Some of the customers were florists of a previous era such as the original Flo's of Waterville, Saunders' of Lewiston, and Grondon's Greenhouse of Farmingdale that was later to become Butler Twins. He worked with his father in their little greenhouse in 1936, growing seedlings, pansies, geraniums, and hanging baskets supplying local business and outlets.

In 1948 after serving a 2 year tour of duty in the Army, he came home and began to build his business in the greenhouse industry.

During the next thirty years, he built and grew crops in a total of 13 greenhouses, one of the largest ranges in the State at that time, and became the largest grower of outdoor pansies in Maine, growing over 100,000 at the peak of production.

To this day, he describes his best crop as the 7 children that he and his wife have raised and the resulting grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

He has belonged to and volunteered for many groups and community committees including the Mid-Maine Greenhouse Growers Association, the Kennebec County Agricultural Soil and Water Conservation District, the local school board, municipal boards, the American Legion, the Grange, and the Maine State Florists' and Growers' Association.

He has donated his time and plant resources to many charitable organizations including the Shriners, his church, and many local high school graduations and community functions. He has lent his time, talents, and knowledge of our industry to many fellow growers, tradesmen, and customers as they have encountered growing issues and challenges.

Today, he oversees a company that distributes flowering plants, foliage, perennials, hanging baskets, geraniums, holiday plants, and other greenhouse products to some of Maine's finest shops from Caribou to Biddeford.

He grew up in the industry, has made a living in the industry, and has made a life in the industry, raising his family and leaving a horticultural heritage to his offspring.

It is with great thanks for all you have done for our industry to proudly award the Ed Johnson Award to Alden Longfellow.

. One of the highlights of the MSFGA annual activities is the presentation of the Edward D. Johnson award. The recipient is recognized for services rendered, some time ago or recently, for the benefit of the Maine State Florists’ & Growers’ Association and the betterment of Maine floriculture. Each year, the officers and directors of the MSFGA executive board select the current awarded by secret ballot. Who was Ed Johnson, the person who made this prestigious award possible? In 1939, when the Maine State Florists’ Association was organized, Ed was employed as Assistant State Horticulturist by the Maine Department of Agriculture. His work kept him in touch with Maine florists and greenhouse managers and from its conception, Ed showed a great interest in MSFA. This concern was reflected in THE MAINE LEAF, a newsletter to plantsmen which he first published in 1944. Much of the material in the LEAF was directed to florists and greenhouse operators.

As a result of his increased involvement, Ed was selected Secretary-Treasurer of the MSFA in 1946, a position he held until his unexpected death, due to a heart attack, on July 14, 1967. During his 21 years of service to MSFA, Ed was much more than a Secretary-Treasurer. He organized meetings, minded the store and was involved in just about every phase of the Association’s ventures. While performing these duties, his unique style of commitment endeared him to those with whom he came in contact. Always a gentleman, he added dignity and graciousness to every MSFA occasion.

Ed’s sudden passing proved to be a great loss to Maine agriculture and to the Maine State Florists’ Association. At a subsequent MSFA Executive Board meeting, it was voted to preserve the memory of a devoted, long-time friend of the Association by implementing an award in his name.

To date, thirty-three MSFGA members have received this plaque because of their willingness to share skills, time and labor as did Ed Johnson. This volunteerism enhances the MSFGA and Maine’s floriculture and ornamental horticulture industries. Fortunately, there are many other candidates whose abilities and contributions meet the guidelines to receive this special award, which was established in 1967.
